The parents of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted to North Korea in 1977 and is said by Pyongyang to be dead, expressed their sorrow Tuesday at seeing photographs of their daughter that were brought back by Japanese delegates after a fact-finding mission to the country.
Sakie Yokota, 68, mother of Megumi, who was abducted from Niigata Prefecture when she was 13, said of one of the pictures, "This picture looks like the 13-year-old Megumi...the image we remember well. Seeing the apprehensive look in her face in the picture, I could not hold back my tears. We all cried, her brothers cried, too." Japan Today
What an unspeakably sad position that Megumi's family is in. How unbearable it must be to have to look at photographs of your child taken from you just as she was beginning to grow up. Kept from you as she was growing up by an inept, kleptomanical, backward government. Unable to help her as she gave up on life. Surely, some things are beyond enduring.
