Thanks for the link and the follow-up on Naipaul and his subject. It seems to me Naipaul has become kinder and more sympathetic with a wider variety of people as he gets older, wiser, and better able to imagine alternative routes his own life could have taken. Just the opposite of Paul Theroux, whom I will no longer read after forcing my way through his bitter, intolerant, and self-absorbed The Happy Isles of Oceania.
